Tips for making the first visit a success |

- Try to show your child the ‘office tour’ pictures and pictures of the staff prior to the appointment. Many children get excited when they then come to the office and see familiar faces/rooms.
- Have a positive attitude and use positive words when speaking about the appointment. Avoid using words such as “hurt” or “needle” but instead get your child excited about “taking a roller-coaster ride” in the examining chair, and getting a “special prize” after the appointment.
- Schedule the appointment for a time of day when you know your child behaves the best. For most young children this is during morning hours. Keep in mind your child will get stressed if they see you stressed. Try not to be rushed on the day of their first appointment.
- Bring a favorite toy, such as a stuffed animal, blanket, or action figure. This may help your child feel more at ease and comfortable with the new environment.
