Preparation for First Visit

It may speed up your visit and reduce anxiety if you fill out your forms prior to the first visit and bring them with you New Patient Printable Forms pdf.If your child’s previous dentist obtained X-ray films, request copies be sent to you to help reduce radiation exposure.

What to expect at your child’s first visit

Depending on the age of your child, you can expect different types of visits. If your child is 3 or under or extremely apprehensive about going to the dentist, you can expect something like a "well baby check" on your first visit. This will most likely consist of a visual evaluation of your child's oral health, parental education about good and bad dental habits, and some bonding time between “Dr. Steve” and your child to build trust. If your child is a bit older and will cooperate, he/she may receive a cleaning, fluoride treatment and x-rays as recommended by “Dr. Steve” at the appropriate age and time of need.

Tips for making the first visit a success

  • Try to show your child the ‘office tour’ pictures and pictures of the staff prior to the appointment. Many children get excited when they then come to the office and see familiar faces/rooms.
  • Have a positive attitude and use positive words when speaking about the appointment. Avoid using words such as “hurt” or “needle” but instead get your child excited about “taking a roller-coaster ride” in the examining chair, and getting a “special prize” after the appointment.
  • Schedule the appointment for a time of day when you know your child behaves the best. For most young children this is during morning hours. Keep in mind your child will get stressed if they see you stressed. Try not to be rushed on the day of their first appointment.
  • Bring a favorite toy, such as a stuffed animal, blanket, or action figure. This may help your child feel more at ease and comfortable with the new environment.
